This is the 1999 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster Concept Car. It was sold by RM Auctions in Pebble Beach, California on August 19, 2011. It was originally presented at the NAIAS in Detroit in January, 2001. It was donated by Ford Motor Company to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. This Thunderbird was not DOT- or EPA-certified. It cannot be registered for highway use in the United States and was offered on a bill of sale only. From a strictly technical standpoint, this Thunderbird is not actually a Ford but is a Lincoln (according to the VIN). Its assembly plant is noted by position #11 in the VIN, the letter S, which is the Ford Research Center, a code formerly known as Allen Park assembly plant. In addition, while this car is referred to as a "2001" it is technically a 1999 model (the X in position #10) Click on the links below to see more pictures. This Thunderbird will not show up in some other Registry rosters which do not offer 1999-2001 year choices. + + + + + UPDATE August 2012, Glen Hockenjos has supplied the VINs and pictures of the other two 1999 Thunderbird concept cars which are Registry Numbers 40089 and 40090. UPDATE July 2013, Glen Hockenjos says: While visiting Vintage Cars of Sarasota in Sarasota, Florida a curator told myself that this car is currently in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.
